History

Efes Bakery has been operating since 1998 and is today, one of WA’s largest wholesale bakeries and continues to be run by those who created it.

 

Our Story

Efes Bakery: Turkish Bread MakingWhilst today we operate from purpose built premises in Welshpool, the beginning was much more humble. We started the business as Efes Café and Kebab shop in Leederville, which we continue to operate to this day. In those early days we purchased a one deck stone based oven so that we were able to make long flat Turkish bread for our customers daily and we served them with homemade dips. They were such a hit that customers were coming in specifically for our freshly baked Turkish breads and taking them home for entertaining.

Then we decided it was time  to expand and supply restaurants and cafes and when we started doing so the business really started to take off. Another decision was made to supply our roduct through supermarkets”. An  appointment with Action (now IGA) Supermarkets and, upon seeing the Efes Bakery Long Flat Turkish Bread they agreed immediately to retail the product. Only a month later we were approached by both Coles and Woolworths who also wanted to range the product!

Quite quickly we found ourselves extremely busy as Perth went Turkish bread crazy!! To be able to service the need we needed to move to larger premises and then again before too long, we moved to an even larger premise, which we designed and built our own wholesale bakery and that is where we run our business out of today.  We purchased brand new traditional authentic stone-based ovens from Turkey and had them shipped over, so as to be able to not only keep up with demand, but also retain the authentic handmade quality of our product. Every bread that we produce is slightly unique because it is handmade. We deliver all over the meteropolitan area.oven

We’ve also expanded in the range of breads produced. We now have 48different lines and specialise in Authentic Turkish flat breads and rolls (of course:), as well as wraps and paninis, traditional crusty loaves and rolls, delicious woodfired pizza bases, foccacia breads, sourdough breads and sliced toast and fruit loaves etc.

In keeping with our time honoured traditions, each piece of bread is individually hand shaped using only the finest West Australian ingredients, before being baked in traditional stone based ovens. The result is a delicious home-grown authentic Turkish bread to be enjoyed fresh by all Australians.

 


The Name:  EFES (pron. F-S), where did it come from?

Efes was one of the most illustrious ancient cities of the Mediterranean and perhaps the most eminent city of the ancient Greek and Roman times. Pronounced “f-s” the city was renowned for its beauty and decadence. It is also famed as being the final resting place of the Virgin Mary. Efes also celebrated grandiose architecture and is the site of The Temple of Artemis, which was one of the original Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
